Let’s Talk About Art

Art can be an escape for people where they can just get away from everything and express their feelings, beliefs, or whatever is on their mind at that moment in time. What makes artwork good is the meaning behind it. Every major artist knows this and conveys something magical by putting their meaning or beliefs in some form of artwork. The form of artwork that we decided to use is a song by Lee Brice called “Boy”. It’s a country song and we believe that this work hits just about all these points and especially hits the heart if your a father or a son. This song is based off of the perspective of an emotional father who knows what the hardships of life are and its his way of expressing how much he can’t wait to see his son go through them. This is not only a song, it’s an amazing story that can make you rethink what the true passion of a father, son relationship is. It’s an escape should someone need reassurance; it’s magical because it can get people to realize that they’re not the only one’s going through this and that everything is going to work out in the end, always for the better.
Interview:
We decided to interview our friend Matt Thomas so we could get an outsider perspective on not only on what he thought about the song, but also what he thought that the song was trying to portray. We asked Matt what does he think the song means and is trying to portray? Matt then when on stating, “I think that the artist is trying to give his son a life lesson because he knows that his son doesn’t know what life is going to bring him and he wants him to be prepared.” Then we asked if the song motivated him to start thinking about the future. He said, “Yeah, definitely. It makes me look forward to having a family and having that special bond with my son or sons”. Finally we asked, what feelings come up when you listen to this song? After a 10 second pause, he said, “It brings up feelings and emotions of love and hope and inspiration but also of regret and empathy. It’s a song that makes me think about how I was raised and what I may not know I’ll encounter in life, but also that I need to be very conscientious of my future children.”.
After hearing what another person had to say about the song and sitting on what we wrote earlier in this essay, nothing has changed. This is still a song charged with emotion. Thinking about it more, this song gets the listener to think about the past, present, and future. What we also realized, however, was that this song is more than just about the father, son relationship. It can be applied to those of both parents and siblings. The overall meaning of the song is the same in our eyes, it simply can be applied to more than just one other person. In terms of art in general, it only makes what we believe stronger. Art is filled with emotion and passion, and this song does not disappoint on any account.
After:
As we were preparing for this presentation, neither one of us changed our views on what the song meant. It’s still a song about about relationships, but yet it could more likely than not be applied to almost all close relationships, even those outside of a blood family. After reflecting, we realized that close friends should feel this way about their friends and that all we want is to see our close family and friends do well in life and not suffer. No one likes to see people go through that.
